Our Story
Through honesty, integrity, hard work, grit and humbleness three integral families have paved the way for the success of Flasher Equipment Co. of today.
In 1956 Frank Gruen founded Gruen & Mueller Equipment Co., in which he run until a few years later when Flasher Equipment started as a full-service traffic control barricade rental company. Mr. Gruen implemented fundamental changes within the industry including bringing the traffic control world the transition from candle lit flashers to battery powered lights.
His son, Herbie, at age 16, went to work for his father where his first job was to change the batteries in the blinking lights that were then the newest alternative to a smudge pot.
Through City and the State innovation in the pavement marking and traffic control business - from the transition from painted signs to the modern retroreflective sign sheeting; and from chlorinated rubber paint to thermoplastic markings the Gruen’s innovation and success has always been cutting edge.
Founded in 1949 by E.R. Hartley, Hartley Construction was finding it's footing after WWII in the highway rehab and asphalt paving industry in Texas and Oklahoma. Joined in 1969 by son Gary, the company began to shift focus to sealcoat and hotmix paving. William Hartley joined the family business in 1986 and soon moved over to manage the small, in-house striping company, Striping Systems, Inc. Retiring in 1990 after over 40 years in the contracting business, E.R. Hartley was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from TXAPA in 2003 for contributions to the industry.
With 69 years of experience, Brannan Paving Co., Ltd., originally known as Brannan Brothers and then Brannan Paving Company, was established in Victoria, Texas in 1954 by Waylan Brannan Sr., RC Brannan, and Melvin Brannan. With dedication, perseverance and a look towards the horizon, the Brannan Brothers started the paving business with a desire to succeed. The Korean War had recently ended, and they dove into the paving business.
Waylan Brannan Sr is considered one of the pioneers of the Seal Coat Asphalt Industry and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Texas Asphalt Pavement Association (TXAPA) Seal Coat Committee in 2015.
In 1990, the company switched ownership and started to be led by Waylan Brannan Jr. From meager means as the years progressed, this growing company hurdled many obstacles and hardships to withstand the decades of success in the industry.
Waylan Jr continued blazing paths forward in the industry and is show by receiving the Bob Galloway Award from TXAPA in 2015 that recognized individuals who have made significant contributions to the Seal Coat Industry as well as receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from TXAPA in 2016 as well.
Founded in 2018 by industry veterans Waylan Brannan III and William Hartley, Centerline Technologies has grown rapidly into one of the leading pavement marking companies in Texas. The acquisition of Flasher Equipment was a natural fit and progression for both companies and will create a unique opportunity for both companies to build the next chapter for the business, customers, and team members.
The family’s legacies will continue though the fundamental scriptures and quotes from the past as well as the future.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 … A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Colossians 3:23 … work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord not for man
“We can do it Bigger, Better and Faster”
“We the unwilling, led by the unknowing, have accomplished so much, so long, with so little that we will attempt the impossible with nothing.”
“Safety, Quality, Production and Profitability” with God’s blessing I know we will continue to succeed in this business for many years to come.
